PET picture description formula
Use this five-sentence framework:
- This picture shows... introduce the whole scene.
- There is / There are... describe the main people or objects.
- They are... explain the action.
- In the background... add two supporting details.
- I think... make one simple guess or opinion.
Example sentence starters
- This picture shows a family in a kitchen.
- There are two children sitting at a table.
- The woman is probably their mother.
- In the background, I can see some food and a window.
- I think they are preparing dinner together.
Common PET mistakes
Many learners list nouns only: “woman, table, food, child.” Instead, build full sentences with verbs: “A woman is standing near the table while two children are eating.” This sounds much more natural and earns better marks.
